Gypsum Board in Doha: Types, Fire Ratings and How to Buy

Gypsum board in Doha is sold as standard, moisture-resistant, fire-rated and acoustic panels, usually 12.5 mm thick in 1.2 m by 2.4 m sheets. Use standard board for dry ceilings and walls, moisture-resistant board in bathrooms and kitchens, and fire-rated board wherever Qatar Civil Defence requires a rated partition. Confirm the board type and the certificate with your consultant before you order.

This guide explains each board type, the sizes and weights to plan around, how fire ratings work, how many sheets a room needs, and what to ask suppliers.

What Gypsum Board Is and Where Doha Projects Use It

Gypsum board, also sold as plasterboard or drywall, is a panel with a gypsum core of calcium sulfate dihydrate pressed between two paper liners. Installers screw it to galvanised steel studs and ceiling channels, then tape and fill the joints so the surface can be painted. In Doha it forms most interior partitions, false ceilings, bulkheads and wall linings in offices, hotels, hospitals and apartments, because it is a dry, fast system that leaves a flat finish. Large developments show the range: USG Middle East lists Sheetrock Regular, Type X, Mold Tough and shaft wall products among the featured materials for Msheireb Downtown Doha. The GCC gypsum board market reached USD 1,789.6 million in 2025 according to IMARC Group, which means Doha buyers have a deep supplier pool and a wide spread in documentation quality, so the paperwork matters as much as the price.

Types of Gypsum Board Sold in Doha

Market reports for Qatar split the product into regular, moisture-resistant, fire-resistant and soundproof boards, with impact-resistant, prefinished and exterior sheathing grades as smaller groups. The right choice follows the room, not the price list. Standard board suits dry ceilings and walls. Moisture-resistant board, often green-faced or sold as Mold Tough, suits bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. Fire-rated board, often pink-faced and sold as Type X, Type C or Fireline, goes into rated shafts, corridors and partitions. Acoustic systems use denser board or layered, insulated partitions for meeting rooms, hotel rooms and clinics. Cement board, such as Durock, replaces gypsum board behind tile in showers, because gypsum should never sit in standing water. Face colours differ by brand, so read the product data sheet instead of trusting the colour.

Sizes, Thickness and Weight

Most boards are 1,200 mm wide and 2,400 mm long, which gives 2.88 m² per sheet. Common thicknesses are 9.5 mm and 12.5 mm, and fire grades are often 12.5 mm or 15 mm. Some manufacturers also list longer sheets of 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 m, which reduce horizontal joints in tall partitions. A 12.5 mm regular board weighs about 7.4 kg per square metre in Knauf's UAE-made environmental product declaration (EPD) and 7.65 kg in the USG Middle East Skyrock EPD, so a full sheet is roughly 21 to 22 kg. A Knauf 12.5 mm fire-resistant sheet at 2.4 m is listed at 29.7 kg, so fire-rated sheets are around 8 kg heavier. That extra weight matters for ceiling hangers and for how many people it takes to lift a sheet.

Fire Ratings and Civil Defence

Fire performance is where a wrong purchase costs the most. Knauf states that its fire-rated systems are tested, classified and certified to the standards Civil Defence requires across the GCC, and that its technical team supplies project-specific test reports, fire-resistance ratings and Civil Defence certificates on request. A rating belongs to the whole assembly: board type and thickness, number of layers, stud size, fixings, joint treatment and any penetrations for services. Swapping one element, such as a thinner board or a lighter stud, can void the tested result. Domopan, which began producing fibre-gypsum board in Qatar in 2011, reported at launch that its board was approved by the General Administration of Civil Defence and reached a two-hour rating. That is a manufacturer claim from 2011, so re-verify it today. Ask for the test report that matches the exact assembly on your drawings, and have your consultant check it against the project's Civil Defence submission.

Moisture, Humidity and Doha Conditions

Doha is a coastal city with humid summers and buildings that run air conditioning for much of the year, so ceilings and walls face condensation and damp risks that dry inland projects see less often. Moisture-resistant board has a treated core and face that slow water absorption, and mould-resistant versions such as Mold Tough add protection against mould growth. Neither type is waterproof. Use moisture-resistant board in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, seal cut edges and screw heads, and keep boards off wet floors and away from leaking pipes. In showers and steam rooms, use cement board such as Durock behind the tile, with the waterproofing membrane the system requires. Fix any leak source first, because every gypsum board, including treated grades, fails after prolonged wetting.

How Many Sheets to Order

Divide the area to cover by 2.88, round up, and add an allowance for cuts and offcuts. Ten percent is a common planning allowance for simple rooms, while bulkheads and coves need more, so confirm the figure with your contractor. For a 4 m by 5 m ceiling the area is 20 m². Twenty divided by 2.88 is 6.9, so seven sheets cover it with no waste and eight cover it with a 10 percent allowance. For a partition 5 m long and 3 m high, lined on both sides, the area is 30 m², which needs 11 sheets before waste and 12 with it. Count layers: a rated partition often has two layers per side, which doubles the board count. Order from one batch where you can, so the boards match.

Choosing a Supplier in Doha

A Ken Research overview of the Qatar market names Knauf Qatar, Saint-Gobain Gyproc, Gyptech Qatar and Qatar Gypsum Board Factory among the key players, and USG Middle East supplies Sheetrock and Skyrock products across the region. Domopan offers DomoGypsum, a fibre-gypsum board it manufactures in Qatar and said at launch was priced competitively against imports. Treat this as a starting list, not a recommendation, and compare suppliers on paper. Ask each one for a written quote stating board type, thickness, sheet size, brand, country of origin, applicable standard, and whether the price is per sheet or per installed square metre. Request fire, acoustic or moisture test reports, plus the Civil Defence certificate where a rating applies. Confirm delivery, off-loading and lead time to your site, since sheets are heavy and their edges damage easily.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard size of gypsum board in Qatar?

The most common sheet is 2,400 mm by 1,200 mm in 12.5 mm thickness, covering 2.88 m². Some manufacturers also list 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 m lengths. Check the data sheet of the specific brand, because sizes and thicknesses vary.

Is moisture-resistant gypsum board waterproof?

No. It absorbs water more slowly than standard board, but it still fails if it stays wet. Use it in humid rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, and use cement board behind tile in showers and other wet areas.

Do I need fire-rated gypsum board for a villa?

It depends on the design, the use of each space and the Civil Defence requirements for your project. Fire-rated board is most common in shafts, escape routes and partitions in high-rise, hospital and hotel buildings. Ask your consultant to confirm.

How many sheets do I need for a 20 m² ceiling?

Seven sheets cover 20 m² with no waste, since each sheet is 2.88 m². Eight sheets allow for a 10 percent cutting allowance. Add more for coves, bulkheads or a second layer.

Is gypsum board the same as plasterboard and drywall?

Yes. Gypsum board, plasterboard and drywall all describe the same panel type. The name changes by region and trade, and the product itself is a gypsum core between paper liners.
